American Airlines Invites the Public to Join Marlo Thomas and St. Jude Patients to Create One-of-a-Kind Mural to Celebrate 80 Years of Service in the Greater New York Area
Visitors to Bryant Park on Monday morning will have the chance to become artists for a day, as they help put the finishing touches on a three-dimensional canvas mural derived from a new painting by renowned painter Charles Fazzino. The artwork is called "A Legacy of Service to New York," a colorful view of Manhattan Island landmarks looking from the Battery up to the Bronx, which celebrates American Airlines 80 years of service to the Greater New York community
At an 11 a.m. news conference, Marlo Thomas, National Outreach Director of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital®, along with St. Jude patients will add their brushstrokes to the canvas in an event that will help kick off the St. Jude Thanks and Giving® campaign, which begins that day and runs through the holiday season.
The 50-inch by 52-inch mural interpretation of the painting will be sold through an online auction. The timing and log-in information for the auction will be announced at Monday's news conference. The proceeds of the mural's sale will go to St. Jude, the premier research and treatment center for children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases.
Award-winning actress Marlo Thomas, daughter of late entertainer and hospital founder Danny Thomas, along with patients from St. Jude, come together with Fazzino and Chuck Imhof, American Airlines Vice President Sales - Greater New York, to unveil the original painting, along with the canvas mural in progress. The group will be invited by Fazzino to add their brushstrokes to the canvas. Those visiting Bryant Park will also have the opportunity to pick up paintbrushes and make their own artistic contributions.
"We are thrilled to partner with American Airlines once again for the St. Jude Thanks and Giving campaign," said Thomas. "The proceeds from the auction of Charles Fazzino's wonderful canvas will help St. Jude fulfill its mission of saving the lives of children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases."
"St. Jude does extraordinary work that benefits children throughout the world who need their help," said American Airlines' Imhof. "It's great that we can once again show our support through the Thanks and Giving campaign and present this marvelous New York mural for auction today at Bryant Park to benefit the lifesaving work that takes place everyday at St. Jude."
The Pond at Bryant Park, presented by Citi® and the Holiday Shops at Bryant Park, is a winter celebration for New York that runs through mid-January. It offers a 17,000 square-foot ice skating rink where visitors can skate at no charge and an outdoor holiday market, which is a European-style shopping village featuring gifts from some 100 unique retailers from around the world. American Airlines is The Pond's Official Airline, and the airline maintains dedicated space within its Skaters Pavilion.
From Dec. 1 through Dec. 7, Charles Fazzino will also set up a temporary exhibit of some of his more popular works inside the American Airlines Pavilion at The Pond. Visitors will have the opportunity to peruse the collection and pick out their favorites to order for the holidays. Fazzino will donate a portion of the proceeds from the week-long exhibit to St. Jude.
