40,000 'Touches of Home' Provided to Troops This Holiday Season
December 2007 will mark the fourth year that American Airlines AAdvantage® members have sent deployed care packages and messages of support to service members through the USO's Operation USO Care Package program.
Since December 2003, AAdvantage members have donated more than $850,000 to the Operation USO Care Package program, sending more than 34,000 care packages to America's men and women in uniform deployed overseas. Many service members once again will be separated from their families this holiday season, and American Airlines wants to reach at least 6,000 additional troops, setting a year-end goal of $1 million.
Operation USO Care Package is the only program of its kind that is authorized by the U.S. Department of Defense. USO care packages are the way to send a message of encouragement to a service member and provide a touch of home. With a $25 donation, AAdvantage members will earn 125 AAdvantage miles and sponsor a holiday care package full of approximately $75 worth of items the troops have requested, including a prepaid international phone card, sunscreen, snacks, travel-size toiletries and more. With each donation, AAdvantage members can write a personal message of support and holiday greetings that will be included in the care package.
"The overwhelming response by AAdvantage members over the past three years has been truly remarkable," said Kurt Stache, president of the American Airlines AAdvantage Program. "We hope to increase the level of participation this year, and touch the lives of thousands more deployed men and women, letting them know we appreciate their service and sacrifice."
AAdvantage members can sponsor care packages with a personal note of thanks at http://www.usocarepackage-aa.org/. Members will be prompted to enter their AAdvantage number and have 125 AAdvantage miles posted to their account for each care package sponsored. Those who are not AAdvantage members can visit http://www.aa.com/enroll to sign up and participate in this program.
