Snowball Express spreads cheer to kids of fallen heroes

On Dec. 12, 2015 more than 1,700 children and widows/widowers of fallen military service members will travel to Dallas/Fort Worth on the Snowball Express, an organization that strives to provide hope and new memories to the children of soldiers who have fallen in the line of duty.

For 11 years, American has partnered with Snowball Express and it’s volunteers to bring together children and surviving parents of fallen military heroes while on active duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001. Not only does American’s donations of more than $1 million have earned the airline the honor of being the only Medal of Honor Contributor. As the official airline and presenting sponsor of Snowball Express, American and its flight crews, who volunteer their time to fly the 9 charters, will transport family members to Dallas from around the country. Those families that can’t fly on the charters fly on miles donated through American Airlines Miles for Kids in Need program.

These Gold Star families spend four days engaging in a variety of fun activities that help create new memories and lasting friendships. The events, however, aren’t purely for fun. The weekend is also a time for the families to support each other, share their grief and celebrate their accomplishments after suffering a devastating loss.

This year’s Snowball Express will include a trip to the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, a private show by the National Cutting Horse Association at Will Rogers Memorial Center and Coliseum and a performance by Gary Sinise and his Lt. Dan Band, an annual highlight of the weekend.

American Airlines has been a very strong supporter of Snowball Express since its inception in 2006. Not only does American’s donations of more than $1 million have earned the airline the honor of being the only Medal of Honor Contributor.
