Our nation’s military men and women are on the front lines, in the trenches and behind the scenes, serving our country in cities across the globe to protect our most basic rights and freedoms. And American is doing its part to help thank them for their contributions.

On April 6, American employees will join forces with thousands of their fellow Americans in support of the USO during an annual event called National Volunteer Week. The USO is a private, nonprofit organization whose mission has been to “lift the spirits of America’s troops and their families” since it began back in 1941, and it relies on the spirit and generosity of both individuals and businesses to help achieve its goals.

American, as the official airline of the USO, has long partnered with the organization to help recognize the service and sacrifice of our troops and their loved ones. American has participated in the past four years, encouraging employees to step up their efforts during National Volunteer Week. This year employees were encouraged to participate in various charitable activities at USO centers across the nation, many of which are in airports in cities directly served by the airline, including Dallas, Chicago, Phoenix, Boston, Los Angeles and Hawaii. Volunteers help by meeting and greeting military personnel, arranging fundraiser luncheons, preparing care packages, and providing facility maintenance support.

National Volunteer Week is an annual nationwide event spearhead by the Points of Light Foundation and is dedicated to celebrating people doing extraordinary things through the gift of service. American is doing its part by devoting invaluable resources, including its employees’ time and efforts, to help commemorate the brave men and women who serve our country. Mark National Volunteer Week on your calendar and join us by stopping in your local USO center and saying thank you to those who so honorably serve us and our nation.
