|What is it about a dude ranch that entices us to abandon heels for horses, skyscrapers for endless acres? Perhaps it is that the dude ranch has been elevated to offer all the rustic trappings of a ranch in a nice, five-star package.|
Case in point: C Lazy U Ranch in Granby, Colorado, a 90-minute drive from Denver or Steamboat Springs that is a year-round playground for all ages. Kids get this right away. Each day at the 8,500-acre property they are welcomed with a list of activities that includes, in summer, horseback riding, fishing, swimming, and games. But first, they explore. They run down hills, jump into the pool, and go to the stables to greet the ponies and alpacas. They reconnect with their families throughout the day, especially at each of the three gourmet meals served at the lodge, a rustically chic log cabin whose black-and-white photos speak of families from generations back who have been coming to C Lazy U to discover their inner wrangler (and in fact, many of C Lazy U’s adult guests have been coming here since they were children).
Yes, we love that the ranch has gone luxury. But what we most love is that no matter how high-tech and fast-paced our lives are, there is a part of every one of us that wants to connect with the great outdoors, to open the window and see not buildings but trees, horses, and children for whom 8,500 acres of wilderness is the ultimate playground.
