When the world is your shopping center, unique gifts abound. From food to fragrances, jeans to jewels, here are some stylish shops not to be missed.
YASTIK BY RIFAT OZBEK
Opened in Istanbul’s ritzy Nisantasi neighborhood six years ago, this store from reputed designer Rifat Ozbek focuses solely on cushions. The idea came about when Ozbek, who loves to entertain friends, was dissatisfied searching for pillows to seta relaxed yet sophisticated tone. Which explains why the cushions you find at his whitewashed boutique are rare pieces of art, made with fabrics handloomed in Uzbekistan.
MUST-BUY: Whichever piece you choose, all the cushions are embedded with a small sachet of lavender, which perfumes the room anytime the pillows are puffed.
Three designers bring their collective talents in textiles, silver, and glass together at this five-month-old shop in a heritage building in Stockholm’s Old Town. The trio — which has created objects for Ikea, Kasthall, and Villeroy & Boch in the past — actually shared a studio for years, which led to the idea of opening a space where they could showcase their strengths under one label and one roof. We love that it’s all Swedish design, all made in Sweden. Nature motifs such as dragonflies, pomegranates, and branches figure into many pieces as well, from tea towels to the jewelry.
MUST-BUY: The Maito glass vases (maito means milk in Finnish; they were inspired by milk bottles)
Think of Clare Vivier’s chic bags as classic French glamour by way of laid-back California. Her recently opened store in Los Angeles’ Silverlake neighborhood, designed by Barbara Bestor, follows the same aesthetic with an exterior that feels more Marais than Sunset Boulevard. “Our flagship was designed to resemble an old-fashioned French pharmacy,” Vivier says. Inside, you’ll find her full line of gorgeous bags, laptop cases, and signature foldover clutches — all made in L.A. — alongside Steven Alan beach blankets, Chateau Marmont candles, and delicate jewelry by L.A. designer Grace Lee.
MUST-BUY: Embossed basketweave duffle bag or a monogrammed clutch (pictured)
