In the last three years, only one golfer on earth has managed to snag three Majors, golf’s biggest tournaments. That would be Padraig Harrington, a famously affable Irishman known for his constant smiling no matter how he’s playing — and perhaps the only pro golfer in recent history photographed eating an ice-cream cone on the course. Nicknamed Paddy by some of his biggest fans, Harrington won back-to-back British Opens (2007, 2008) and the 2008 PGA Championship to go with his numerous other career wins on the European and PGA Tours. Ranked fifth in the world and the first European to ever win back-to-back Majors, Harrington is the doting father of two, the global face of Wilson Golf, has just embarked on a career as a golf-course designer, and has launched a charitable foundation. All of which means the Dubliner spends a lot of time on the road — last fall he played on three continents in a single month.FAVORITE NON-GOLF TRAVEL DESTINATION:
Sandy Lane, Barbados.
FAVORITE GOLF COURSE:
Royal Portrush, Northern Ireland.
INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL TIP:
I tend to stick to new time zones with regards to my sleeping pattern. I would try to go to bed at 11 p.m. and get up at 7 a.m. Even if I don’t sleep for all that time, my body will be resting. I also try to stay hydrated when I travel.
FITNESS ROUTINE ON THE ROAD:
Before I play, I spend 45 minutes doing exercises, see my physio [physical therapist] for 20 minutes, and then hit an hour of shots to warm up. In the evening, depending on energy level, I do a short weight session in the gym.
WHEN I GET TIRED:
I go to the gym for a while, as it will wake me up.
WHEN I’M NOT PLAYING GOLF I LIKE TO:
Spend time with my wife, children, and the rest of my family.
I STARTED A CHARITY TO:
Provide financial assistance to deserving beneficiaries throughout Ireland and the rest of the world. With a wonderful family, I feel extremely privileged to be in the position I am in. I do appreciate, however, that there are others who are less fortunate. With this in mind, I established the Padraig Harrington Charitable Foundation.
FAVORITE FOODS WHILE TRAVELING:
Popcorn in the cinema and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.
EVERY VISITOR TO IRELAND SHOULD SEE:
The Book of Kells at Trinity College and the Guinness Storehouse.
DREAM SITE FOR A GOLF COURSE DESIGN:
Anywhere it would make a difference to the surrounding area and the local community.
SIMPLE TIP FOR ALL THE AMATEURS I’VE PLAYED WITH:
Hold the finish at the end of the swing.
