Tropical adventure awaits at Tabacon Grand Spa Thermal Resort. As I stood at the edge of the platform, looking out over a valley from the vantage point of 1,000 feet above the ground, I thought, “Here goes nothing.” Putting what sparse trust I had in the small cable that indeed held my life, I leapt off the edge, let out a scream or two, and was immediately zooming through the warm air at around 50 mph for almost a minute. When I dared to look around me in mid-air, the view was breathtaking, and I mean that quite literally. But when I got my breath back on the opposite platform, I took a moment to survey my surroundings: the majestic Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal before me, lush rainforest below me, bright blue sky above me, and the pinch-worthy beauty of Costa Rica all around me.
Six more zip lines later, I landed on solid ground and had completed the Sky Tram & Sky Trek (Arenal Zip Line Canopy Tour). Being an adrenaline and adventure enthusiast, I was not disappointed. After a 30-minute bus ride during which I saw lemurs and a sloth in their natural habitats, I arrived back at Tabacón Grand Spa Thermal Resort, a luxurious, tropical haven tucked away in a sea of green rainforest near La Fortuna, Costa Rica.
And succumb I did when I entered the open-air bungalow Grand Spa. The Jacuzzi, the fruit smoothies, the dim lights and candles, and the plush robes put a haze over me that made me feel like Sleeping Beauty. When it was my turn to get a Balancing Treatment facial, the aches and kinks from zip lining became no more. When I later received the Signature Tabacón Massage, the volcanic mud both exfoliated and softened my skin. Tabacón’s motto is, “Bring nature into your spa experience,” and with the sounds of cascading hot springs and lemon-yellow birds chirping in the background, the resort did just that while
providing highly attentive service.
As you can imagine, all of this adventuring and relaxing worked up my appetite. Tabacón’s Ave del Paraíso Restaurant had the remedy. Its other dining option, Los Tucanes Restaurant, also provided a luxury gastronomic experience. The variety and types of meals offered at both restaurants weren’t quite as vast as the rainforest view from my table — but almost. When it came time to rest my weary-but-happy self, my spacious and sumptuous suite room with a bed made of angel wings ensured immediate slumber. Out of Tabacón’s 102 guest rooms, no two were exactly alike, but all had the most important quality in common: a spectacular view of the tropical gardens and rainforest.
But don’t take my word for it. Go and experience tropical adventure for yourself.
