Jazz was born in New Orleans, nurtured in Chicago, and popularized in New York, but the genre has its newest stage in San Francisco at the just-opened SFJAZZ Center (sfjazz.org). The 35,000-square-foot Hayes Valley venue will house a main hall with flexible seating ranging from 350 to 700, plus a secondary 80-seat ensemble room and a restaurant by acclaimed chef Charles Phan of Slanted Door fame. In addition to shows by the house SFJazz Collective ensemble, upcoming dates feature singers Ute Lemper (April 11), Tony Bennett (May 23), and Dianne Reeves (May 24-26).
