Capella Hotels and Resorts is a rising star. Its Cabo San Lucas property proves why.

Not yet familiar with the Capella Hotels and Resorts brand? Shame; you’re missing out. While the brand has just five resorts open and three on the way, Capella is already proving to be a model for what luxury accommodations should be about circa 2013, with its “no rules” philosophy that includes flexible check-in/check-out times. In Cabo San Lucas, perched majestically where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean, Capella Pedregal is the perfect place to cut your teeth on the brand.

Capella’s Pacific-front beach wasn’t easy to come by, you learn when entering the property: The resort is accessible via a private tunnel that separates the town of Cabo San Lucas from the exclusive setting. And, in fact, the resort feels miles away from civilization (even though shopping and restaurants are a mere five-minute walk).

You’ll have time to finish your welcome margarita as you walk the expansive, indigenously landscaped grounds to your room. If a walk to one of the property’s four pools seems too taxing thanks to the aforementioned beverage, fret not: Each of the 96 rooms, suites, and villas has its own private plunge-pool-with-a-view.

Dinner at the cliffside El Farallon is a must (even if you aren’t so fortunate as to be staying at Capella Pedregal), where you select one of the fresh catches of seafood displayed on ice a la seaside fish markets. And the Auriga Spa is world-class, with treatment rooms almost floating above its private pool.

Of course, service is what really sets apart a star property. And no detail is too small for the attentive staff of Capella to overlook. On a recent stay, one guest in the group was gluten-free, and the resort made sure every meal (including the complimentary chips and fresh-made guacamole that await you in your room each afternoon) and poolside snack had gluten-free alternatives. Star treatment, indeed.
