Celebrated artists, writers, musicians and cultural figures are riding the rails this month as part of STATION TO STATION: A NOMADIC HAPPENING, a cross-country contemporary art installation connecting live events in nine U.S. cities. Project creator (and experimental artist) Doug Aitken transformed a train into a mobile kinetic light sculpture specifically for the event, and artists aboard each car are documenting the voyage via online outlets. The three-week tour includes $25 ticketed performances by local artists and creative heavy hitters such as Charlotte Gainsbourg, Christian Jankowski, Rick Moody, Dan Deacon, Twin Shadow and Alice Waters at train stations along the way.

Executive producer Molly Logan calls Station to Station “an immersive mix of art and culture” that takes creative work to new audiences while generating funds for arts initiatives. Proceeds support seven partner museums, including the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and SITE Santa Fe in New Mexico. “Many people don’t walk through museum doors, and they don’t get exposed to work that actually is really accessible and inspiring,” says Logan. “That needs to change.” Station to Station leaves New York on Sept. 6 and will stop in Pittsburgh; Chicago; Winslow, Ariz.; and other cities before ending in the San Francisco Bay Area on Sept. 28.
