MILES DAVIS AND JOHN COLTRANE
MILES DAVIS & JOHN COLTRANE:
THE BEST OF THE COMPLETE COLUMBIA
RECORDINGS (1955-1961) (COLUMBIA LEGACY)
This best-of of a best-of compiles the key
moments of last year’s mammoth Davis/ Coltrane box set that recently garnered two Grammys. Jazz novices and casual fans should especially dig it: It’s a good starting point, and, at one CD, a cheap alternative to the box set.
MORNING GLORY: THE TIM BUCKLEY
ANTHOLOGY (RHINO/ELEKTRA TRADITIONS, $30)
Father of Jeff Buckley, whose death was also shrouded in mystery, Tim Buckley was one of rock music’s most versatile artists, dabbling in folk, rock, and R & B, but never committing to one genre. This 34-song collection is a library of his underrated genius.
THE QUINCY JONES-SAMMY NESTICO ORCHESTRA
BASIE & BEYOND (QWEST RECORDS)
Arrangers Jones and Nestico tag-team for this tribute to legendary jazz icon Count Basie, who lent the two a hand early in their careers. Jones and Nestico pay him back beautifully with this big-band outing. Somewhere, Basie’s saying, “Thanks.”
