Take A Break
Cuban cigars get all the press, but the island’s coffee is muy bien as well. At San Francisco’s first Cuban coffee bar, Café Lo Cubano, authentic preparations like cafecito (espresso with a teaspoon of sugar) and cortadito (with a tablespoon of milk) are served up in a Buena Vista Social Club atmosphere in Laurel Heights. Heavy-hitting chef Johnnie Alamilla (of Alma fame) oversees the delicious hot-pressed Cuban sandwiches chased by the sweet caffeine concoctions — recently declared the best coffee in the city by the San Francisco Examiner. Rock-and-roll tequila aficionado Sammy Hagar is teaming up with America’s “Ambassador of Tequila” Julio Bermejo and James Beard-nominated chef Joseph Manzare, to open Tres Agaves near San Francisco’s SBC Park (home of baseball’s San Francisco Giants) in August. While the kitchen dishes out regional Central Highlands cuisine from Jalisco — the Mexican tipple’s traditional home — tequila junkies and baseball fans will be talking home runs and Hornitos in what is sure to become the caliente spot to catch a buzz before baseball. 130 Townsend St., (415) 621-7188, www.tresagavesrestaurant.com

It’s not easy to find someone at your local wineshop in whom you can place complete faith when you hit a wine crisis. San Franciscans, luckily, no longer need worry. Part wine lounge, tasting room, and retail shop, VinoVenue takes the mystery out of trusting a stranger’s recommendations by uncorking each of the 100-plus wines they have in stock. Just purchase a tasting card, insert it into an automated tasting station, and — voilà! — a one-ounce tasting is poured. You like it, you buy it. 686 Mission St., (415) 341-1930, www.vinovenue.net
