I have a lot to talk about, so let me get right to it. In your hands, you hold our second annual Green Issue. We received quite a bit of positive feedback about last year’s, and we’ve enjoyed putting another one together. In addition to really great stories, we’ve included something special for you: a pullout booklet that has 50 things you can do to become greener. Some of these are a little time-intensive, but most of them are easy to do. Better yet, the booklet is a small, convenient size so that you can keep it with you and refer to it anytime.

But before you scold us (instead of thanking us), let me nip something in the bud.

No, the magazine’s not printed on recycled paper. Not yet, anyway. But we have looked into greener ways of doing business and will continue to do so.

Just as you’ll determine which things you can afford to do (in regard to both time and money) from our 50 suggestions, so will we, first choosing what we can do easily and affordably, and then moving on to more difficult and more expensive changes.

Not everyone can do everything at once, but hopefully if we all try to take baby steps, we’ll be clean and green before we know it.

For inspiration, click here and read about the Planetwalker. He definitely skipped the baby steps. And while his style is not for everyone, his story is interesting.

Click here, we sort the fiction that swirls around going green from the facts. It can get pretty confusing out there, so this article should help. There’s so much more, but I need to change topics and talk about our seventh annual Road Warrior contest. But be sure and read all of the Green Issue and then let me know what things you are doing (or even thinking about doing) to decrease your carbon footprint.

Now, on to Road Warrior.

The contest has begun! Have you gone to our website to get started? There are three tasks you need to complete, and as has been the case in past years, they’re going to require a bit of brain activity. After all, these are some crazy, cool prizes you’re going after.

We’re two weeks along and have just a few more to go (depending on when you’re reading this), as the contest ends on August 31 at 11:59 p.m. CDT. While that may sound like a long time from now, I can’t tell you how many people try to enter at 11:50 p.m. every year. It’s possible to do, but if you don’t have everything ready to enter, or if there’s a computer problem, you’re toast. So save yourself, and us, the heartbreak (and the heartbreaking e-mails) and get started now. Just head to www.americanwaymag.com/roadwarrior for all the details.

If we choose you to be one of our five winners, here’s what you’ll get (in addition to being part of the fancy-schmancy photo shoot that will land you on our pages!):

The grand-prize winner will receive the coveted one million AAdvantage bonus miles and two million Hilton HHonors bonus points.

The second-prize winner will get a Bose Lifestyle 48 home entertainment system, a pair of Bose QuietComfort 3 Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones, and a Bose Wave music system, as well as a five-night trip for two to the Hilton Papagayo Resort in Costa Rica, courtesy of American Airlines Vacations, and a Panasonic Toughbook W7 laptop computer.

And three third-prize winners will each receive a three-night trip for two to the British Colonial Hilton in Nassau, Bahamas, also courtesy of American Airlines Vacations, and a Panasonic Toughbook W7 laptop computer.

Good luck!
