Cheers to Phillips Distilling Company, which is still going strong after 100 years. The Minneapolis-based business began as a tiny distributor of newspapers and candy but expanded into wine and spirits in the 1930s — around the same time that company salesman Al Dorsch concocted America’s first schnapps after seeing saloon patrons drop peppermint candies into their whiskey. Today, Phillips — still family-run, under fifth-generation CEO Dean Phillips — is known for its flavored vodkas and whiskeys, including UV Lemonade and Phillips Union Vanilla. Also popular is its Prairie Vodka, an organic Kosher blend made in partnership with a co-op of 900 farmers. As part of its anniversary festivities, Phillips is re-releasing Gin-Ka, a “happy blend” of gin and vodka, this summer.
