Quick — does your state allow direct shipment of wine from out of state? Don’t feel bad if you’re clueless; state laws on
grapes-to-go are a complicated hodgepodge (see www.freethegrapes.org).

As of now, 24 states either forbid or restrict direct-to-
consumer shipments of wine bought online or by phone. It’s verboten in Michigan, New York, and Pennsylvania, for example, while California permits a consumer to buy two cases per month, Arizona two per year, and Alaska a “reasonable quantity,” whatever that is.

Will there ever be an Amazon.com of the wine world? That may well depend on the U.S. Supreme Court, which will hear a case in December challenging Michigan’s ban on direct wine shipments.
