The world of fashion is rife with risk takers and eyebrow raisers, and perhaps no one personifies the bad-boy–designer image more than Marc Jacobs. Consider the runway theatrics (concerts! old-fashioned steam trains! light displays!), the antics off the runway (usually playing out in New York gossip papers), the personal fashion choices (heads turn when he walks in wearing a skirt) and the tattoos (33 and counting). But, then, take the awards (he was 24 when he received the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s New Fashion Talent Award, and he’s won nine more CFDA awards since) and the stunning fashion he creates. This month, all that MJ magic crosses from the world of fashion into the world of beauty products when Jacobs launches his first beauty collection in partnership with Sephora. And, never one to do anything halfway, his is not a light tread into a new realm — MARC JACOBS BEAUTY is a full, 120-product collection with new products to be added each season. The line features 16 different color cosmetics, including foundation, concealer, bronzer, mascara, eye shadow and lipstick, and it wouldn’t be Marc Jacobs if it didn’t have a heavy dose of innovation, mirth and those oh-so-important pop-culture nods. The lipsticks are highly pigmented gels that plump lips on contact and have names inspired by Jacobs’ favorite films. The eyeliner, Magic Marc’er, has a custom calligraphy-pen design for ease of application. The color? Only the most intense black will do, and Jacobs calls that shade Blacquer (the flake-proof gel mascara comes in the same shade). The Genius Gel foundation boasts a first-of-its-kind buoyancy technology that produces a highly buildable formula and is chock-full of trendy-but-proven anti-aging ingredients including coconut water and hyaluronic acid. Time will tell if Jacobs will make the same impact on beauty as he has (and does) on fashion, but so far, he’s off to a pretty good start.
