Long a cult favorite of celebrity makeup artists and Hollywood stars like Katherine Heigl, Christina Applegate and Kristin Davis, Japanese cosmetics line Koh Gen Do — formerly available only in Japan — has finally begun (albeit slowly) rolling out its line stateside. First available exclusively at Barneys New York and Beverly Hills in fall 2010, it hit Barneys Dallas, Boston and Chicago earlier this year. Setting itself apart from other cosmetic brands, Koh Gen Do incorporates anti-aging and restorative properties — basically, skin care — into its products. Instead of clogging pores and stressing out the skin, Koh Gen Do products soothe, enhance and nourish it. The line also eschews petroleum-based ingredients, synthetic pigments and animal testing. In other words, it’s about as natural as you can get, and your skin will love you for it. Our favorites from the line include the Maifanshi Moisture Foundation ($55), which the company claims is a “3-D real skin foundation … [with] optical smoothing for fine lines and uneven surfaces.” Science and fancy talk aside, this basically means the foundation disappears into the skin, leaving a flawless (and poreless) finish that lasts up to 10 hours. No joke. Now you see why we love it. Other must-tries include the Maifanshi Natural Lighting Powder ($35); an ultrafine light-diffusing powder; and the truly unique Japanese pampas grass Macro Vintage Stretch Eye SheetS ($53 for 12 sets), which are extra-moisturizing and work wonders at firming the muscles around the eye area. www.kohgendocosmetics.com
