Box Set (ATCO/Elektra/Rhino, $59.98)
When Neil Young, Stephen Stills, Richie Furay, Bruce Palmer, and Dewey Martin got together in Los Angeles to form Buffalo Springfield in 1966, there was no concept of just how lasting an impression they would leave. The group only lasted two years, but this 88-song, four-CD box set touches on the gems, rarities, demos, and everything in between, while giving a glimpse into what was to come. There was something happening here, and what it was is pretty clear.
Luther Vandross (J Records)
Five-time Grammy winner Luther Vandross returns to the scene with his 14th studio album and first for legendary record exec Clive Davis’ J Records. From the first single, “Take You Out” to the 15th in this collection, it’s obvious that despite losing 120 pounds, the 50-year-old R&B icon hasn’t lost an ounce of his soulful magic. Look for him on tour this fall.
