It may be hard to believe, but 15 years ago, the pop-culture kingdom was ruled by five women nicknamed Sporty, Baby, Posh, Ginger and Scary. The Spice Girls would go on to become the best-selling female group in history, and in 1998, they took full advantage of their popularity and made a film, the critically panned (but $75 million-grossing) Spice World. “When it came to making the movie, it was wish fulfillment, really,” remembers MELANIE BROWN, AKA SCARY SPICE (far left). “We wanted to be silly and have fun and wear wonderful clothes and party around the world. Who wouldn’t?” Brown remembers filming a scene in which the women got to meet one of their musical heroes:
“One of the highlights was shooting Elton John’s scene in the movie. We’re all such huge fans of Elton’s. I mean, he’s a legend. We were all in his dressing room hanging out with him before we shot his scene, and we were just putting kisses all over his face. All of us, just kissing him constantly. He finally said, ‘Oh my God, would you just stop!’ I’m not sure, but if you watch the scene on DVD, you might see our lipstick on his cheeks and forehead.”
