For years, Lauren Conrad was the reigning queen of reality TV, starring on the pioneering MTV dramas Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County and The Hills. And while the 26-year-old has happily moved on — she abandoned The Hills while it was still a hit to pursue other interests — she has reinvented herself as a beauty expert, fashion designer and novelist. In fact, “L.C.,” as she’s known to fans, has two new books hitting shelves: Lauren Conrad Beauty, a how-to guide for the beauty-obsessed, and Starstruck: A Fame Game Novel, the second novel in the series. Here, she gives us an inside glimpse at her (now much more private) life.

On reality TV:
“I don’t watch a ton of television, but the shows I do watch aren’t reality shows. Being on one really does ruin it for you; a lot of them have the same formula, and you kind of know the tricks.”

On life in the limelight:
“I actually moved so the paparazzi wouldn’t be able to find me so easily.”

On her writing process:
“I make it a point not to read other books while I’m writing, because I like authors who sound like themselves and have their own voice.”

On staying organized:
“I reorganize my closet every six months, so I always know exactly where everything is and, even in a last-minute scramble out the door, I have no problem putting together an outfit.”

On being ready for anything:
“I always keep a red lipstick and blush in my bag, just in case I need to dress up my look at a moment’s notice.”
