Cocktails are getting a little nutty these days, thanks to the creativity of some mixologists who aren’t content to just serve up a dish of mixed nuts as a side to your drink. Kevin Diedrich, head bartender at Jasper’s Corner Tap & Kitchen (www.jasperscornertap.com) in San Francisco, is known for his walnut-flavored Tender Nob, a combination of cognac, rye whiskey and Italian liqueurs; the drink is named after the neighborhood in which the bar resides. In Cleveland, The Greenhouse Tavern (www.thegreenhousetavern.com) offers the Sage Advice, which is a combination of the sweet taste of OYO Honey Vanilla Bean Vodka (from Ohio’s first artisanal microdistillery, Middle West Spirits) and fresh sage, crushed walnuts and burnt lemon. The mixture is left to steep for 24 hours before it is shaken, strained and served with a splash of soda. And in both the Artisans Restaurant and Maggie’s Pub at Lake Placid Lodge (www.lakeplacidlodge.com) in New York, bartenders serve up colleague Lori Kudelski’s The Plantation, which incorporates white crème de cacao and Godiva chocolate liqueur with housemade peanut-infused rum, all shaken and served over ice.
