The Bad Miss Bennet: A Novel
By Jean Burnett
(Pegasus Books, $25)

With Jane Austen having been gone for close to 200 years, someone had to pick up the slack — and author Jean Burnett does a commendable job in The Bad Miss Bennet. In this sequel to Pride and Prejudice, the focus shifts to Lydia, the youngest of the five Bennet sisters, who doesn’t give a hoot about convention. Widowed at an early age, Lydia concentrates on snaring a new man, but not always gracefully; one attempt ends in a tumble into a Venice canal. With a tone that recreates Jane Austen’s with a saucy wink, The Bad Miss Bennet is loads of fun.
