The Basics: The Tsukiji Fish Market is open every day except for Sundays, national holidays, and a handful of other days; see the calendar posted on www.tsukiji-market.or.jp. The action begins with the 5:30 a.m. tuna auction, though at various times, tourists have been discouraged from attending. The market is open from two a.m. until noon.
Getting There: Three subway lines (the Oedo, the Hibiya, and the Yurakucho lines) deposit you within a five-minute walk of the market. Taxis are also available throughout Tokyo.
Where to Stay: The most convenient hotel for Tsukiji-goers is the aptly named Tokyu Stay Higashi-Ginza, located at the fringe of the outer market. Rooms begin at about $80 per person. (4-11-5 Tsukiji, Chuo-ku, Tokyo, tel. 011-81-3-5551-0109, www.tokyustay.co.jp)
Where to Eat: Daiwa Sushi, Building 6 (5-2-1 Tsukiji Chuo-ku, tel. 011-81-3-3547-6807) or Sushi Dai, Building 6 (4-5-1 Tsukiji Chuo-ku, tel. 011-81-3-3547-6797). The two sushi restaurants are within 50 feet of each other, are purely no-frills, and boast the best sushi in the world. The Chef’s Special at either place runs $30 to $35. Both open at five a.m. and close at two p.m.
