SPOOKY SLAMMER: Al Capone and other heavies did time in the Eastern State Penitentiary, North Philly’s notorious state prison-turned-national landmark, which is open for tours. The creepy, castellated place really hits its stride with Terror Behind the Walls, a full-scale haunted house inside the actual prison that consistently ranks among the top fright attractions in the country. www.easternstate.org/halloween
HAUNTED PHILADELPHIA 101: If there’s any doubt this city is teeming with spirits, Ghost Tour of Philadelphia aims to scare and enlighten with its trifecta of old-town Halloween experiences: the Ghost Tour candlelight walk, the Haunted Trolley Tour and the Ghost-Hunting Tour through Independence Park, Society Hill and Old City, respectively. www.ghosttour.com
HALLOWEEN-ISH BREW: Triumph Brewing Company’s Pumpkin Ale is an annual fall hit at the Old City brewpub. The full-bodied, malt-focused beer with real pumpkin puree and hints of nutmeg, cinnamon and allspice has been described as about as close to drinking a pint of pumpkin pie as it gets. www.triumphbrewing.com
TRICK-OR-TREAT STREET: Lined with elaborately decorated historic homes, Delancey Street, specifically the 2000 and 2100 blocks, is the downtown mecca for candy collectors.
BONUS LATE-OCTOBER EVENT: The 22nd annual Philadelphia Film Festival (Oct. 17-27) will showcase top independent and foreign films at select venues throughout Greater Philadelphia. www.filmadelphia.org/festival
