Get ready for a Coca-Cola bombardment. Not actual cans from the sky, of course, but technology from the sky in a Coke summer promotion. Coke’s “Unexpected Summer” (go to www.unexpectedsummer.com
), which begins this month, stars Global Positioning System (GPS) technology hidden in more than 100 cans around the country. Winners who find the cans — which are the exact size and weight of a real Coke can — use them to call in so they can be tracked and found via GPS for prize delivery: a 2005 Chevy Equinox. The idea was born out of Coke’s ongoing “Real” campaign. “We were looking for an exciting, energetic promotion that existed in a very real way,” says Dick Patton, senior brand manager for Coca-Cola. “GPS enables us to connect to people in everyday real life.” As long as they aren’t changing the formula, we’re on board.
