So you haven’t tuned in to Friday Night Lights yet, and you’re worried you’ll be lost when you do. Don’t sweat it. We’ve got a quick-guide primer on who’s who.

Coach Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler): The beloved coach of the Dillon Panthers and a father figure to many of the boys on the squad, Eric is the heart of not just the team but the show.

Tami Taylor (Connie Britton): Tami is the wife of Eric and is the newly named principal of Dillon High School. This season, she’ll try to refocus the town’s obsession on football to stronger education.

Julie Taylor (Aimee Teegarden): Last season, Julie broke the starting quarterback’s heart. But the two may find a way to relight their spark this season, their senior year. She is occasionally bratty to her parents, Eric and Tami.

Matt Saracen (Zach Gilford): Matt is the first-string quarterback for the Dillon Panthers; his position is threatened when a hotshot freshman hits the scene. Matt and teammate Landry Clarke
(Jesse Plemons) make the show’s best comedy duo. Outside of school, Matt tends to his senile grandmother.

Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch): Dillon’s resident bad boy, Tim repeatedly sabotages his potential but is given a pass because of his stellar football skills. He’s finally getting a shot with Lyla Garrity
(Minka Kelly), the town’s good girl/smarty-pants/cheerleader.

Buddy Garrity (Brad Leland): The head of the Dillon Panthers’ boosters organization, Buddy can’t let go of his glory days as a Panther himself. He is obsessed with the team and obsessed with winning. He’s also divorced, and daughter Lyla now lives with him.

Tyra Collette (Adrianne Palicki): Gorgeous and tenacious, Tyra’s dated just about everyone in town, including Landry Clarke and Tim Riggins. She is dead set on getting out of Dillon and making a better life for herself.
