The third time’s the charm for Fashion’s Night Out (FNO). The one-night-only fashion and shopping extravaganza is coming to a store near you on Thursday, Sept. 8.

Created in 2009 by Vogue’s Anna Wintour, the Council of Fashion Designers of America and NYC & Company (and with the help of similar organizations in Paris, London, Milan and Moscow), the purpose of FNO was to put the fun back in shopping, to kick off the fall buying season and, most important, to restore consumer confidence and boost the industry’s economy.

Whether you prefer shopping in department stores or little boutiques, special incentives to entice you to shop abound, such as celebrity appearances by the likes of Victoria Beckham, Charlize Theron and Justin Timberlake; live music; special gifts with purchase; and complimentary cocktails, canapés and even cupcakes.

Last year, there were more than 1,000 participating retailers in New York alone, as well as activities across the world — and this year promises to be bigger and better. For the first time, e-tailers will be included in FNO, and several more national retail chains have signed on to participate (including Nordstrom and ?Neiman Marcus), helping to bring the shopping celebration to every market, big and small, in the U.S.

And, of course, FNO-exclusive designs — long- and short-sleeve T-shirts and adorable totes — are available at www.fashionsnightout.com, with 40 percent of the proceeds going to the New York City AIDS Fund in the Community Trust.
