Despite my not-so-subtle point about the dangers of going off to another continent and leaving your senior editor in charge, I’m pretty sure my reign as editorial viceroy will last exactly one issue and that Sherri’s photo will be back in its familiar location the next time you pick up American Way. Until then, I get to savor the perks of Sherri’s job (which include getting a sneak peek at the terrific stories in this issue) and steal candy from the dish on her desk without the fear of getting busted.
Shockingly, I don’t get a raise for my stint as the poor man’s Sherri Burns, but I do get the satisfaction of seeing the tremendous response to our sixth annual Road Warrior Search. If you haven’t submitted your entry, time is running short: You have until August 31 to enter online at www.americanwaymag.com/roadwarrior.
Five of you will be winners, and here’s what you’ll get: The grand-prize winner will receive two million Hilton HHonors Bonus Points, one million American Airlines AAdvantage bonus miles, and a two-year membership to the Admirals Club.
The second-place winner will get a whole lot of great products from Bose, including the Lifestyle 48 home entertainment system, a SoundDock digital music system, and a pair of QuietComfort 3 Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones. He or she will also receive a four-night vacation for two at Hilton Los Cabos Beach and Golf Resort, courtesy of American Airlines Vacations, as well as a one-year Admirals Club membership.
Three third-place winners will take off for a four-night vacation for two at Hilton Cancun Golf and Spa Resort from American Airlines Vacations and enjoy a one-year Admirals Club membership. On top of that, each of the five winners will receive a Panasonic Toughbook W5 laptop computer.
But the love doesn’t stop there. The five winners and their guests will also be whisked away to a yet-to-be announced Hilton Family hotel for a big photo shoot. Hint: If you’re going to enter this year, make sure you have an up-to-date passport.
To be eligible to win, here’s all you have to do: Upload the photos that you feel best show your life as a road warrior and write captions to go with them. We also want you to get in touch with your inner Zen master and write a haiku. (For those of you who have blocked out all memories of ninth-grade English class, there’s an example on our website.) Finally, there’s a quick multiple-guess test that is way less mentally taxing than the Mensa quiz we publish.

As one of the contest judges, I offer you this piece of advice: Be creative with your entry, and then be even more creative. Boringness will be the kiss of death.
PS: For all sorts of legal reasons, the contest is open only to U.S. residents. My apologies in advance to all our international road warriors.
