I was driving out by the airport the other night, and the car’s windows were open so I could enjoy the warm pre-summer Texas evening. All of a sudden, a plane coming in for landing zoomed right over my car. It seemed as though it were mere feet away. I looked at it through the sunroof in awe. Luckily there weren’t a lot of cars on the road, because I might have run into one of them in my brief moment(s) of distraction.

When I’m in L.A., I often stay near the airport, and I love to stare out my hotel window at the 747s. In fact, I frequently take a run along Sepulveda Boulevard, where, like that night I was driving, planes come in right over my head. It stops me in my tracks every time. The only thing that tops that, in fact, is the stop I make at In-N-Out Burger on my way back to the hotel.

What is my (and many people’s) fascination with airplanes? I wonder. Because some of us (and most of you on this plane) travel so much, we seem to take for granted the ability to get from one place to another quickly and almost effortlessly. Instead of marveling at this feat of engineering, we complain about weather delays, how loud our neighbor is, and the overall tiredness that comes from being in three time zones in one day.

Does it sound like I’m describing you? If so, then you’re probably a bona fide road warrior. And we’re going to give you a chance to prove it.

It’s time for our annual Road Warrior Search (our sixth). To prove your mettle, you have to creatively tell us about your life as a road warrior — through pictures and with words. The number of miles (or segments) you travel is important, but your ability to describe what it’s like to be on the road that much is also important. It’s up to you to choose to highlight the positive or the negative — we just want you to make us laugh, smile, weep, frown, think, etc.

If you are one of the five people we declare as our winners, this is what you’ll get: The grand-prize winner will receive two million Hilton HHonors Bonus Points, one million American Airlines AAdvantage miles, and a two-year membership to the Admirals Club. The second-place winner will get a whole lot of super products from Bose, including the Lifestyle 48 home entertainment system, a SoundDock digital music system, and a pair of QuietComfort 3 Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones, as well as a four-night trip for two to Hilton Los Cabos Beach and Golf Resort, courtesy of American Airlines Vacations, and a one-year Admirals Club membership. Three third-place winners will take home a four-night trip for two to Hilton Cancun Golf and Spa Resort from American Airlines Vacations and a one-year Admirals Club membership. On top of that, each of the five winners will receive a Panasonic Toughbook W5 laptop computer.

There are more details on page 10, or you can go to www.americanwaymag.com for the rules and regulations and (more importantly) for the entry form. We are standing by now to see your world.

P.S.: For of all sorts of legal reasons, the contest is open only to U.S. residents. My apologies in advance to all our international road warriors.
