Foodies, rejoice! Eataly, the massive Italian food emporium, is slated to open this month in Chicago just off the famous Magnificent Mile. Known as the largest artisanal Italian food-and-wine marketplace in the world, Eataly first opened in Turin, Italy, and now has 22 stores all over the world, including Rome, Tokyo and New York City. The founders are again teaming up with Mario Batali and partners to open their second — and, at 63,000 square feet, largest — U.S. store. Hungry Chicagoans will find not only delicious imported Italian goodness but fresh foods prepped in-house using local ingredients from in and around Chicago. Think homemade gelato and beer made at the on-site brewery, Birreria Chicago. Eataly Chicago will also feature eight full-service restaurants, a beer-tasting room, a cooking school and a bakery and pâtisserie. Be prepared to drool over the enormous selection of fresh cheeses, meats, fish, pizza, panini, vegetables, handmade pasta, sauces, breads, chocolate and olive oils. Stark white shelves will heave with perfectly aligned jars of salty anchovies, pestos, tasty tapenades and more. For those who can’t get to Chicago (or Rome, for that matter), Eataly now offers many of its products online — including some great gift baskets for the holidays. Buon appetito!
