Smartphones and tablets were supposed to spell the death of books — at least in the traditional sense. But somebody forgot to tell that to Books for America, the nonprofit group that’s turning used electronic devices into good, old-fashioned paperback and hard-cover books for children. Donate a cellphone, tablet, e-reader or laptop to the organization, and the group will sell it for cash that will be used to fund library improvements. To date, the organization has given $5.2 million in books to schools and shelters. Pre-addressed mailing labels are available online, and the donation is tax-deductible. It’s a win-win for everyone.
