GERMAN ART IN ENGLAND

One of the greatest patrons of German art was Russian Czar Nicholas I. In the early 1800s, he commissioned dozens of works by masters such as Caspar David Friedrich, Germany’s leading Romantic painter. Friedrich’s works have long been housed in St. Petersburg, but through August 18, they’re on display at the Hermitage Rooms in Somerset House, London. 011-020-7845-4630, www.hermitagerooms.com
