Here are some of the best places to eat, stay and see when touring our nation’s capital.

EAT: The Regent Thai Cuisine, tucked between the nightlife districts of U Street and Adams Morgan, is a local favorite because it is reasonably priced and delicious. It may serve the best green-curry-chicken dish on the East Coast. In Dupont Circle, try the insider hangout and steakhouse Palm Restaurant while looking for media talking heads and politicians. Near the Washington National Cathedral, Two Amys offers excellent pizza, calzones and a family atmosphere that exudes Old World charm.

STAY: You don’t have to see the Capitol from your hotel window to stay at a convenient location — the Metro and bus systems make finding lodging surprisingly easy. The Four Seasons Hotel Washington, D.C. in Georgetown is legendary for its service to diplomats and the global elite. Other Georgetown lodgings can be found at the Holiday Inn Washington-Georgetown on Wisconsin Avenue, up the hill from the main artery of M Street. The Washington Marriott Wardman Park is a luxurious, massive hotel that is just steps away from the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and well away from all of the downtown bustle.

GO OUT: For those who want to see the people who really make politics happen, try the dive bar Capitol Lounge. Young congressional staffers and government employees scarf drinks, wings and sliders under the gaze of political pins and posters. For music, the best place to look is Black Cat. The main- and side-stage setup caters to indie musicians as well as well-known acts. For good live jazz (a hidden D.C. treasure), try Twins Jazz or Bohemian Caverns. An excellent, upscale drinking spot is the Russia House Lounge, which offers a staggering 200 types of vodka and good advice on how to drink them.
