BRIAN BEDOL is CEO and co-founder of College Sports Television, the first 24-hour cable network devoted to less-heralded college sports such as lacrosse, wrestling, diving, and volleyball. Bedol also co-founded Classic Sports Network, now ESPN Classic.
AMERICAN WAY: Are you a rabid sports fan?
BRIAN BEDOL: I’m a fan, not a fanatic. This is a good business opportunity. And I like dealing with passionate fans and athletes.
AMERICAN WAY: There’s an ocean of sports TV out there. What’s going to set CSTV apart?
BEDOL: Ninety percent of what’s on TV is professional, and 95 percent of the college sports are men’s football and basketball. College sports is like a year-round Olympics, and it’s about the passion, not the paycheck.
AMERICAN WAY: Are people eager for college wrestling?
BEDOL: In the Olympics, how many people say, “Show me curling”? But if it’s covered well, it’s great to watch. There are vocal, large communities around 20 or 25 sports that haven’t historically been on TV.
AMERICAN WAY: How about some hot picks for August and September?
BEDOL: We’ll have a documentary series called Coach, a look at the legendary college coaches through the eyes of star pupils. You may see Joe Namath talking about Bear Bryant.
