Open weekdays in the heart of San Francisco’s Financial District, Boxed Foods Company offers more than a dozen creative salads and sandwiches — using almost 100 percent organic ingredients. While some items come and go from the menu seasonally, expect to find favorites like the Boxed Chicken Salad (with Granny Smith apple sticks and cherry tomatoes) and the Pear and Brie Press, each served in a recyclable takeaway box. www.boxedfoodscompany.com

Located along a bustling stretch of Bardstown Road in Louisville, Ky., Heart & Soy serves up healthy, casual cuisine inspired by Asian street food. Egg rolls, pad thai and pho are all on the menu, as are house-made tofu and an array of vegan desserts. www.heartandsoy.net

About 20 minutes outside Philadelphia, in Bryn Mawr, Pa., Vgë Café’s vegetarian eats and natural sodas are an excellent alternative to burgers and shakes. Try a barbecued seitan sandwich or a sea-salad wrap made with vegan “tuna” salad. www.vgecafe.com
