Rothbury FestivalJULY 2 TO 5
ROTHBURY, M ICHIGAN
It’s only in its second year, but you wouldn’t know it from Rothbury’s stellar lineup of 60-plus bands. Besides great music, the festival’s main focus is the environment: Golf carts, stages, and lights are powered with biodiesel and solar power; festivalgoers can opt to carbon offset their travel to the event through the Bonneville Environmental Foundation ; and cups, straws, and trash bags are made of corn, while plates are made of sugarcane waste. At this giant green party, expect loads of people -- and a killer soundtrack. From $250. www.rothburyfestival.com
The DEAD, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Black Crowes, String Cheese Incident
ALSO WORTH CHECKING OUT:
Broken Social Scene, Cold War Kids, Matisyahu, Girl Talk
SXSW PLAYERS :
Sam Roberts Band A group of Canadians we met at SXSW tipped us off to this Montreal-based band. In case they’re reading this, thank you, because after catching that live show, we immediately downloaded Sam Roberts to our iPods and put them on our list of bands to watch. Think hard-core jam band with hints of Jim Morrison and the Doors.
The Hold Steady A rockin’ boisterous band that always delivers a solid show. Lead singer Craig Finn’s lyrics are amazing -- especially when you hear the joy in the crowd as they sing along with him.
AW Exclusive! Win a pair of shoes from Merrell.com and a free compilation CD containing tracks from past and current Rothbury artists, including Brett Dennen, Keller Williams, and Dead Confederate. Visit www.americanwaymag.com for details.
