Stag, in Austin, Texas, may be the only store in the country where you can pick out a classic Ralph Lauren RRL shirt and also take home the wall-mounted boar’s head that’s hanging above it. With a playful masculinity, Stag tips its hat at timeless elements of men’s haberdashery (wool-knit ties from Brooklyn-based the Hill-Side, for example), but its ethos is more deeply rooted in a rugged, contemporary American individualism: think locally designed T-shirts from Alchemy Design, vintage Red Wings.
This homage to Americana also extends to various found objects and antiques spread about the store — all of which are for sale. These include a rustic light fixture, presently illuminating a shelf of Malin & Goetz grooming products, and an elegantly worn steel-framed bench, upon which rests a stack of Prison Blues overalls (from a denim line made by Oregon prisoners). And, of course, a cornucopia of glassy-eyed taxidermy is also up for grabs. 1423 S. Congress Ave., (512) 373-7824, www.stagaustin.com
