Antonio Banderas has a host of tough-guy roles to his credit — El Mariachi, Zorro, even Benito Mussolini — and now he’s playing Puss in Boots. Yes, seriously. And though the name may not seem very Antonioish, the character is: Puss is a swashbuckling, sword-wielding ogre killer, and he’s the villain — kind of — in Shrek 2, the sequel to 2001’s hit movie. Puss is tough, but mostly he’s just cute, which makes Banderas well-cast. The same could be said for the entire film, which follows Shrek (Mike Myers) and his new wife, Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz), on their honeymoon. Julie Andrews and John Cleese pop up as Fiona’s parents, and Eddie Murphy reprises his role as Donkey. This follow-up is just as fun. May 21

The basic story is more than 3,000 years old, but it’s still perfect drama — a tale of passion, politics, and war. This incarnation has the added appeal of physical perfection, too. The massive, million-dollar sets are beautiful, and the stars — Orlando Bloom, Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger, and Eric Bana — are equally gorgeous, even when they’re stabbing each other. The ancient Greeks would be proud. May 14
