So you’re adding to the family. Congratulations. But, before you exchange $700 for the cutest Yorkshire terrier in five counties, don’t you want to make sure it has no crazy Aunt Muffin or, worse, an oversize Grandpa Hound? Because, if you wanted a dog the size of a schnauzer, well, you’d buy a schnauzer.

Fortunately, dogs have DNA, too, and the American Kennel Club can test it. Verifying a whole litter costs just $20. Even better, buy from a breeder who is a member of the AKC, and you can get AKC certificates that attest to little Yorkie’s true-blue, tiny-tot pedigree. And of course the service applies to all AKC breeds, in case you want to guarantee your Great Dane will grow big enough to drive your truck. For more information, visit www.akc.org and click on “DNA and the AKC.”
